Eight Great Sunscreens For Runners
Runner's World staffers put 15 sunscreens to the test. These were our favorites.
When we go out for a run, we're likely to remember our phones, our gels, and our headphones. But how about sunscreen? When you consider all the time we spend logging miles outdoors, runners certainly get plenty of sun exposure.
An estimated one in five Americans will develop skin cancer. Sunscreen not only lowers cancer risk, but it also prevents dark spots and other cosmetic damage. To keep your skin safe, it's important to apply sunscreen before your run—even on cloudy or winter days, since skin-damaging rays can still shine through.
Elizabeth K. Hale, M.D. and Clinical Associate Professor of Dermatology at New York University's Langone Medical Center, recommends using a formula that is SPF 30 or higher, water resistant, and offers broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) protection. We tried out 15 sunscreens that met Dr. Hale's criteria. These eight got rave reviews.
Coppertone Sport High Performance Spray

This SPF 50 spray is easy to apply and has a refreshing scent. Although it goes on a bit sticky, it dries quickly and didn't bother our testers. It's also available in SPF 30 and SPF 70. ($10.99, amazon.com)
