6 Weird Signs You Could Be Headed for Heart Trouble
Runners aren’t immune to this common health problem. Here are six ways to ID an increased risk.

Runners can be a healthy bunch, but it’s a mistake to think that all that exercise can completely protect you from heart disease. It’s important to understand the risks. It’s still the number one killer of Americans, according to the CDC, but it can be tough to spot before it’s too late. “For a lot of people, the first symptom is sudden death or a heart attack,” says Steven Nissen, MD, chair of cardiovascular medicine at Cleveland Clinic.
When it comes to identifying heart disease in midlife, Nissen says there are a lot of “strange myths” floating around. Keeping tabs on your blood’s cholesterol and triglyceride levels is really the only hard-and-fast measure of future heart trouble, he says.

Still, research has turned up a handful of odd symptoms that might—emphasis on might—predict heart disease later in life.
