Geoffrey Kamworor, the winner of last year’s New York City Marathon, was hit by a motorcyclist on his Thursday morning training run, according to the Daily Nation. The 27-year-old professional runner was hit from behind.

“I was one kilometer away from my home during my morning run when a speeding motorcycle hit me from behind, and I fell down injuring my leg,” Kamworor told the Daily Nation. “I also got injuries in my head, and he helped me up and took me to the hospital where I was admitted.”

Kamworor went to St. Luke’s Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, where he underwent surgery for a right tibia shaft fracture and a scalp laceration, Kenyan team doctor and orthopedic surgeon, Victor Bargoria, M.D., told the Daily Nation.

He is expected to be released from the hospital on Friday, June 26. To help with healing, he will be given antibiotics, pain medication, and wound care. He will also undergo a leg CT scan and rehab, Bargoria told the Daily Nation.

And, world marathon record holder (and Kamworor’s training partner) Eliud Kipchoge had well-wishes for his teammate.

“The world is full of uncertainties, one of them is what happened to my teammate and friend,” he told the Daily Nation. “I wish him a very quick recovery.”

Kamworor, who holds the world record for the men’s half marathon (58:01), was set to compete in the 2020 New York City Marathon, which was officially canceled earlier this week due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the World Half Marathon Championships, which was postponed from March to October 17.

UPDATE: Kamworor posted on Instagram that he is doing well, and “looking forward to picking up my training towards my upcoming goals.”
