Despite weather conditions that forced the organizers of the LaSalle Bank Chicago Marathon to suspend the race just before noon on Sunday, four hours after the start, one man and three American women still ran fast enough to qualify for the US Olympic Marathon trials. Executive race director Carey Pinkowski said that at that point runners on the course who had not passed the half way mark yet would be directed to the finish. Those on the last half of the course already would be allowed to finish. It was all part of a contingency plan that the race had for these sorts of conditions. Further updates were made in a 2 p.m. press conference held near the race medical tent. At that time they said that over 300 people had been admitted to local hospitals from the race.
Those who qualified are:
>>Michael Cox, 32, of Princeton, WV, finished eighth in the men's race in a time of 2:21:42.
>>Kate O'Neill,27, of Milford, MA was third in the women's race in 2:36:15.
>>Paige Higgins, 25, of Littleton, CO finished seventh in 2:40:14.
>>Tera Moody, 27, of Boulder, CO was ninth in 2:46:40.
