If like me, you've ever finished a run or spotted yourself in a race photo with white, greasy residue on your skin from your sunscreen, you'll understand my quest to find a good running sunscreen.

When should runners wear sunscreen?

Dr Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist and author of The Skincare Bible stresses that it's important for runners to apply sunscreen all year round, not just in the summer months. 'If you do spend a lot of time outside running, ultraviolet light or sunlight is probably enemy number one. We know UV light or sunlight is the single biggest risk factor we've got for skin cancer. Skin cancer is definitely more common in people who get sun exposure repeatedly, which adds up over the years – all those miles you clock over time, you're also clocking UV on your skin indirectly,' says Mahto.

Mahto explains that we all often underapply sunscreen, so advises you opt for a higher factor SPF and to ensure you are putting enough on your skin before heading out the door.

Glossier Invisible Shield

Invisible Shield

While it's not technically marketed as a sports sunscreen, we've been running in the Glossier Invisible Shield daily sunscreen and we're impressed. As the name suggests, this product is designed to be an 'invisible shield' on the skin all year round.

As a water-gel formula, it feels more like a serum and is super lightweight on the skin, whether you're wearing it under makeup or on the run. Unlike other sunscreens on the market, there's no greasy residue or white cast on the skin as you sweat and you don't feel like your pores are getting clogged as you move.

The SPF 30 helps protect the skin from sun damage and works to neutralise harmful free radicals. Like all glossier products, the Invisible Shield is cruelty-free and vegan.

The downsides? While this sunscreen is wonderfully lightweight, it is on the expensive side. The 30ml bottle lasted us a good few months of daily application, but there are definitely cheaper options on the market.
