The old cliche tells us that running is free, but when shoes start nudging £300 a pair and even a T-shirt can set you back £100, it doesn’t feel that way. It’s all relative, of course – you won’t be weighing up the marginal gains offered by a £10,000 bike – but putting together a full-kit flat lay can be a costly endeavour.

Thankfully, you can soften the financial blow if you know where to look. Go beyond the big brands – or dig a little deeper into their line-ups – and you’ll find gear that packs top performance at more friendly prices. Or, better still, let us find it for you, as we’ve done below.

A caveat: we didn’t just pick the cheapest gear out there – we’ve tried and tested everything below to bring you a selection of more affordable products that still offer great performance, and so represent truly excellent value in their categories.
