Whether it's starting your day with a dose of goodness, or recovering post-run, freshly blended smoothies are a great way to fuel up fast.

Buying a smoothie maker may feel like a big purchase, but it could save you money in the long term and help set you up for that next PB.

Here are our Runner's World Lab experts' recommendations for a perfect blend, but scroll on for our detailed reviews:

    Why buy a smoothie maker?

Shop-bought smoothies may taste good but they’re often expensive and can be packed with added sugar.

Making your own smoothies means you'll know exactly what's in there and you can hone the ingredients specifically for running. Try adding protein for muscle repair, oats for energy and turmeric for any post-run inflammation, or have a go at one of our 20 healthy smoothie recipes.

If you're wondering what the difference between a smoothie maker and a blender is, smoothie makers make one drink at a time to minimise waste. Once your smoothie is ready, the jug turns into a cup, so you can grab and go. Blenders tend to be bigger and more powerful because you can use them for lots of different things, but they lack the portability of smoothie makers and usually cost more.

Most smoothie makers are incredibly simple to use – just click the jug in place, whizz the fruit up and that's it. They don't tend to have fancy features, but it's worth looking out for a model with vacuum blending technology, like this Tefal option, which helps lock in nutrients for an additional healthy boost.

    How we test

To find the best smoothie makers on the market, our expert tester headed to the RW Lab to assess each machine for ease of use, any leakage, design, clarity of instructions and, of course, the overall taste of the blended smoothie.

To push each device to the limit, we also experimented with fruits and more fibrous greens, as well as crushing ice (unless the manufacturer advised against it).

    Ninja Blender with Auto-iQ BN495UK

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Ninja Blender with Auto-iQ BN495UK

    Pros

    • Fast
    • Auto-settings
    • Recipe book included
    • Dishwasher-safe

    Cons

    • Pricey

This straightforward machine blends drinks in seconds, easily pulverising all manner of tough ingredients we chucked in. It has three settings, including two auto programmes and an LED countdown timer, so you get your blend spot on every time.

The two 600ml cups have a handy measuring scale on the side, so you know exactly how much protein powder you’re adding, and there’s a recipe book for inspiration.

    Best value smoothie maker

    VonShef UltraBlend Smoothie Maker

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    VonShef UltraBlend Smoothie Maker

    Pros

    • Affordable
    • Strong crushing power
    • Leakproof cups
    • Non-slip feet

    Cons

    • Not dishwasher-safe

Non-slip feet help this stout smoothie maker stay firmly put as it makes easy work of fruit, seeds and ice. It takes leafy greens such as kale and spinach in its stride too, so don’t worry about them getting tangled up.

Rest assured that the 500ml and 800ml cups are totally leakproof, so you can pop your smoothie into your sports bag to take with you to the gym, worry-free. It’s excellent value for money at under £60 and compact enough to store in smaller kitchens, too. The only downside is that it’s not dishwasher-friendly.

    Best portable smoothie maker

    Ninja Blast Portable Blender

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Ninja Blast Portable Blender

    Pros

    • Portable and has a handle for on-the-go drinking
    • Easy to clean
    • Leakproof

    Cons

    • No variation in speeds or modes
    • Struggles to break down seeds

While we don’t advise running with a smoothie in-hand, the portable nature of this little blender makes it handy for busy mornings and quick refuelling.

It’s small but mighty, effectively blending hard and soft fruits into a delicious drink within 30 seconds (it only struggled with pesky raspberry seeds). Ice proved no issue, either – it blended large chunks into fine, uniform pieces, making it your best friend for the summer months.

There aren’t any variations in speeds or modes and, due to its size, its better suited for one smoothie at a time. But, overall, this is a lightweight yet powerful smoothie maker that delivers fuss-free recovery drinks in a matter of minutes.

Best smoothie maker for protein shakes

    ProMixx Miixr X7 Smoothie Blender

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    ProMixx Miixr X7 Smoothie Blender

    Pros

    • Large capacity
    • Wide drinking spout
    • Unique blades well-suited to mixing liquid with protein powders

    Cons

    • Missed some larger chunks of fruit and oats
    • No recipes included in its manual

Like to refuel with protein shakes? Then we’d suggest investing in this smoothie maker – our expert found its dual blade technology useful for incorporating powders, and even the thickest of smoothies passed cleanly through its drinking spout.

Its blending performance was a tad inconsistent – it missed some oats and bigger lumps of fruit, but our mixed fruit recipe blitzed well and ice crushed swiftly. To achieve the perfect texture, use both its ‘on’ and ‘pulse’ settings.

    Smeg Personal Blender

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Smeg Personal Blender

    Pros

    • Easy 'push-down' operation
    • Includes two travel cups
    • Cups are dishwasher-safe
    • Compact

    Cons

    • Struggled to pulverise blackberry seeds
    • Only two speed settings

Smoothie fans usually fall into one of two camps: frozen berry lovers or club ice cube. If you’re all about the latter, then this option from Smeg should be at the top of your list. It crushed every last ice cube evenly in just 13 seconds, it’s nice and compact for faff-free storage, and let’s be honest, it’s quite the looker too.

It wasn't able to fully pulverise berry seeds on either of its speed settings, but it wasn't the only model that struggled with seeds. And for smooth-meets-slushie iced drink fans, it’s a definite yes. Plus, it comes with two reusable bottles that are dishwasher-safe (tick) and lightweight (double tick).

    Best smoothie maker for capacity

    NutriBullet 1200

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    NutriBullet 1200

    Pros

    • Large capacity
    • Powerful

    Cons

    • Price
    • Cups are hard to hold

It can be tricky to know when your smoothie is as smooth as smooth can be, but this bullet blender automatically stops when it’s ready. There’s the option to keep it blending until you ask it to stop, too. It also comes with a book full of easy, delicious recipes and effortlessly processes ingredients of all textures, including ice.

The leakproof cups are big – just under one-litre each – which is ideal for making a smoothie to drink throughout the day, but less so if you have small hands and want to carry them about. One chunky cup has a handle, which helps.

    Best for clear measurement markings

    Zwilling Enfinigy Personal Blender

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Zwilling Enfinigy Personal Blender

    Pros

    • Secure travel lid
    • Pre-set smoothie function blends in just 40 seconds
    • Quieter than average decibel reading
    • Easy-to-read markings

    Cons

    • Doesn’t come with extra recipes
    • Wobbly base

This sleek personal blender has clear measurements on its jug for following your favourite smoothie recipe (though alas, none are included).

It performed well on test, serving up velvety smooth drinks; only berry seeds escaped its blades. You don’t need to hold down a button while it whizzes, making it ideal for multi-tasking, but the base wobbles in action so keep it away from the edge.

    Quietest smoothie maker

    Salter NutriPro 1000 Multi-Purpose Blender

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Salter NutriPro 1000 Multi-Purpose Blender

    Pros

    • Simple to lock in the cup and use
    • Large capacity
    • Much quieter than most

    Cons

    • Travel lid leaked
    • Not dishwasher-safe

Early morning runners, this one’s for you. Making 83.5 decibels of noise on test, it’s significantly quieter than the other smoothie makers on our list, which averaged at around 95. Though not exactly silent, it’s less likely to disturb the rest of your household.

The design is fairly basic and our drinks could have been smoother, but it blitzed ice well. The non-stick feet were effective in use, but the travel lid leaked, making it best suited for WFH brekkies.

    Most compact smoothie maker

    Nutri Ninja QB3001UK

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Nutri Ninja QB3001UK

    Pros

    • No buttons to navigate
    • Price
    • Compact

    Cons

    • No larger capacity option
    • Not leakproof

The sleekness of this slim smoothie maker belies its power. It quickly pulverised thicker fruit such as grapes and apples and coped well with ice and oats, too. Raspberry seeds got the better of it though, adding unwanted crunch to our drink.

It’s only got one power setting and there aren’t any buttons – simply push down on cup to start – meaning it couldn’t be easier to use. Handily, it comes with two 470ml bottles for taking out with you, but note that these aren’t leakproof.

    Best vacuum smoothie maker

    Tefal Freshboost Vacuum BL181D65

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    Tefal Freshboost Vacuum BL181D65

    Pros

    • Vacuum blending tech
    • Multiple settings
    • Stable in use

    Cons

    • Lid a little stiff after use

This speedy smoothie maker blends colourful and seriously smooth 0.6-litre drinks that stay fresh for longer – all thanks to that innovative vacuum blending tech we mentioned earlier.

It has three power levels and a pulse button, and makes a tasty smoothie in just 14 seconds. The vacuum programmes do take slightly longer manual blending, but we like that it comes with a two-year guarantee and ten-year repair warranty for peace of mind.

    Best smoothie maker for accessories

    NutriBullet Graphite

    UK Expert Tested(RW)
    NutriBullet Graphite

    Pros

    • Nutrition guide included
    • Range of accessories
    • Compact

    Cons

    • Struggles to break down seeds
    • No pouring lip on jug

For a reliable all-round performer, look to this trusty smoothie maker from NutriBullet. Runners will appreciate the accompanying pocket nutrition guide and recipe book, as well as the generous range of accessories, including extra blades for milling dry ingredients, a tall 680ml cup and a smaller 500ml carry mug.

It breaks down everything fully except seeds, which disrupt the otherwise smooth mixture. It’s compact enough to tuck away in a small cupboard and shuts down automatically if it overheats.
