When Hoka unveiled the brand-new Cielo X1 at the start of 2024, we assumed – somewhat naively – that the Rocket X line had reached its final countdown. The original Rocket X launched back in 2020 and, after three years of fine-tuning, its follow-up, the Rocket X 2, felt like a confident mic drop. But instead of launching a third version, Hoka threw a curveball and introduced a whole new model in the form of the Cielo X1 – a bold, propulsive shoe built for out-and-out speed.
Fast forward 18 months, however, and not only has the Cielo X1 received a second iteration, but the Rocket X is also back in business – sleeker, sharper and seemingly more accessible in the form of the Rocket X 3.
According to Hoka, the shoe is engineered to deliver ‘speed, long-haul comfort and race-day stability’. Like the Cielo X1 2.0, it features a dual-density PEBA foam midsole, promising a responsive ride, along with Hoka’s signature Active Foot Frame – a technology that sits you within the shoe, rather than on top of it, for greater control when running at pace.
What everyone's reading
But while the Cielo X1 2.0 delivers an aggressive forefoot rocker for maximum propulsion, the Rocket X 3 opts for a more gradual, gently rockered ride. The result? A smoother heel-to-toe transition that should suit a wider range of runners – whether you land on your heel or forefoot. If the Cielo X1 2.0 felt a little too punchy for your liking, this could be the more forgiving (but still speedy) alternative that you’ve been waiting for.
Other notable updates include a new carbon fibre plate constructed with a lateral winglet for added stability. Meanwhile, a rubber outsole ensures grip and confidence, while a single-layer engineered warp knit jacquard aims to balance weight saving with breathability.
Overall, the Hoka Rocket X 3 weighs in at 185g in a women’s size 8, with a 7mm heel-to-toe drop (which is the same as the Cielo X1 2.0).
We’re currently busy testing our pair and will bring you our full review very soon.
