If you’ve signed up to something as adventurous as a multi-day ultramarathon, chances are your phone’s battery is the last thing on your mind after finding a comfortable pair of trail shoes, a well-fitting hydration vest and even freeze dried food. But if you’re heading somewhere remote for your race, you’re going to want to make sure your phone has enough juice to keep you contactable at all times. The solution? A power bank.

Or, perhaps you’re heading out for a day of hiking, or taking on a city race and want something to store in your race bag for the finish line? Either way, we've got you covered.

What’s the best power bank?

In a rush? Here’s our round-up of the best power banks to shop now. Keep scrolling to read more.

What does mAh mean on a power bank?

Wondering why some portable chargers last longer than others? Their power capacity is measured in mAh (milliamp hours). We’ll save the technical jargon, but essentially this means the bigger the number, the more power the bank contains and the more times you’ll be able to recharge your phone, before recharging the bank itself.

What capacity power bank is best for running?

Power banks range from very low-capacity (anything under 5,000mAh) to medium-capacity (5,000-10,000mAh) and higher-capacity (20,000mAh+).

For running, we’d stay clear of anything under 5K, because this will only give you one charge at the very most.

Anything around the 10K mark can charge most phones two times, making this an ideal option if you’re out running or hiking for the day, or want a power bank to store in your race bag.

For multi-day ultras, you’ll want a chunkier 20K-25K power bank. These guys can deliver four to five full charges, depending on your phone. Although, it’s hard to find a 20K power bank for under 400g, so if you’re planning on running with it, you’ll need to factor this in when you’re packing. If you can leave the power bank in your tent or accommodation while you run, weight isn’t so much of a concern.

A final top tip if you're running an ultra: switch your phone to low power mode – it’ll use a lot less battery by turning off some background stuff you probably don’t need.

Belkin 20K Power Bank

20K Power Bank

This 20k power bank has enough juice to fully charge your phone four times. It's also got two USB-A ports and one USB-C port, so you can charge your phone and running watch simultaneously. A handy LED indicator light lets you know how much charging power is left – just remember to press it before you want to start charging your devices, otherwise you'll return an hour later to find yourself on low battery! It's also pretty heavy – not one you want to be running with, but for weekend hiking trips the additional weight isn't awful.

UGREEN Magsafe Power Bank 10000mAh

Magsafe Power Bank 10000mAh

This 10k power bank has plenty of juice for a couple of full charges. It's a magnetic or 'magsafe' model so you don't even need a cable, just pop it on the back of your phone and let it charge. However it does also have ports to charge via cables, and we found these charged more quickly. At 225g it's fairly lightweight, so a good option if you are thinking you'll need a full phone charge and perhaps to give your Garmin or running watch a charge too.

UGREEN 145W Max Power Bank

145W Max Power Bank

This UGREEN charger might be on the pricier side, but if you're just wanting to take one power bank on your adventure, it's got enough juice to charge an iPhone 14 five and a half times. This should be enough for around 5-7 days of battery life. In terms of outputs, there's 2x USB-C ports and one USB-A.

Handily, the power bank itself can also be fully charged within just two hours by a 65W power adapter, which is one less thing to worry about when you're busy packing for your trip. It does weigh in at around half a kilogram, though, so it's definitely overkill for day trips.

Iniu B63 100W 25000mAh Power Bank

B63 100W 25000mAh Power Bank

Another great option for longer adventures, this 25,000mAh power bank has two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. The power outage across the three is excellent (100W), which means charging is a quick process. Our tester found their iPhone 13 pro could gain about 50% charge in 20 minutes using the USB-C port, and particularly liked that the screen showed them the percentage of charge left in the power bank too – a feature you don't see on many portable chargers.

Trust Redoh 10000mAh

Trust Redoh 10000mAh

Trust is the name of the brand, and this powerbank does indeed turn out to be very trustworthy. This 20W (10.000mAh) charger comes at an extremely reasonable price, and does the important things really well. It charges quickly (and when it needs recharging itself, that's a speedy process too). It's got three charging ports so you can boost your phone, watch and even tablet at the same time. You'll get around 46 hours of phone battery life from a single charge to the device, or 12 for that tablet, so for a weekend break you wouldn't even need an adapter. On top of its great usability and simple design, we also love the fact that it's made from 50% recycled plastics.

Iniu B5 22.5W 20000mAh Power Bank

B5 22.5W 20000mAh Power Bank
Now 36% Off

While this is a step down in charging capability from the Iniu B63 (above), it's still a very good power bank. Charging is quick – about 2 hours from 0% to 100%. And it's probably the lightest 20,000mAh power bank we've tested – roughly the weight of two phones. While this might sound heavier, it's not particularly noticeable in a hiking backpack. Speaking of hiking, it's also got a handy flashlight built-in, which makes it an ideal charger for camping trips.

Mophie Powerstation XL 20K

Powerstation XL 20K

The powerstation XL has an internal 20,000mAh battery, which claims to be enough for four full charges. When our tester plugged their phone in with 17% battery, it had reached approximately 90% battery after one hour. They also charged a GPS watch at the same time using the other USB-A output – it took one hour for the charge to go from 3% to 72%. Overall, the bank provided three and a half phone chargers and one watch charge.

The pack itself is on the larger side, weighing in at 453g, so it's definitely not one you want to be running with. But if you’re looking for something to leave in your tent, it’s a fantastic option that will power you through about four days. And for under £55, that's pretty impressive.

Belkin MagSafe 3-in-1 Charging Station

MagSafe 3-in-1 Charging Station

Big fan of Apple? This charging station enables you to charge your iPhone, Apple Watch and Airpods all at the same time. The flat, compact design means it's perfect for travel too – just slide it into your bag and go. For Apple Watch 7s and later, there's also fast charging, which really is speedy. It is on the premium side, but we don't find it overheats like some other chargers too and it's certainly a convenient option to have everything in one.

Can you take a power bank on a plane?

double line break

Heading abroad for a ''racecation"? No sweat. None of the power banks in this list are too large to bring on a plane. That being said, 27,027mAh (100 watt-hours) should be acceptable to bring on flights.
