Faith Kipyegon pulled ahead of Ethiopia’s world record holder Genzebe Dibaba to win Kenya their third athletics gold medal. Dibaba, who was favourite to win, took silver as she finished in second place in 4:10:27, just behind Kipyegon’s 4:08:92. Jennifer Simpson won bronze in 4:10:53, giving the US their first ever medal in this event.

Team GB’s Laura Muir came 7th in 4:12:88 while Laura Weightman took 11th place in 4:14:95.

Men’s 3000m

Kenya dominated the results for the men’s steeplechase as they won two more medals. Conseslus Kipruto won gold with an Olympic record of 8:03:28, while Ezekiel Kemboi won bronze in 8:11:52. The silver medal was awarded to Team USA’s Evan Jager, who finished in 8:04:28.

Team GB’s Rob Mullet was eliminated during the first heat of round 1.

Women’s 200m

Elaine Thompson won her second gold medal for Jamaica, completing a sprint double in 100m and 200m. Dafne Schippers of The Netherlands won silver in 21:88 seconds, just 0.1 second behind Thompson. The USA’s Tori Bowie took bronze with 22.15 seconds.

Team GB’s Dina Asher-Smith came in fifth place in her Olympic debut, while Jodie Williams was eliminated during the semi-finals.
